Long Beach AIDS Foundation Board of Trustees

Garry G Bowie

Chief Executive Officer

(Founding Board Member)

The Long Beach AIDS Foundation is a volunteer-based organization.  The Foundation operates programs and events including the primary fundraising event AIDS Walk Long Beach. The Walk has provided funding for over 35 beneficiary agencies totaling more than $ 2.4million dollars since 1989. With more than 27 Years of AIDS in the United States, the Foundation, serves as a social change agent inspiring and empowering collaborative HIV/AIDS service organizations to embrace new strategic paradigms, create sustainable change in our communities, and reinvigorate innovation and passion in AIDS service organizations to stop new HIV infections in our goal make a real impact on the war on AIDS.

The Board of Trustees are committed to running a premiere Long Beach non-profit agency with all the help of national and local resources.  The Board has adopted a 'Code of Ethics' policy and a 'Conflict of Interest' declaration to ensure a culture of corporate governance above reproach.  In an era where "Public Trust" is being tested, the Foundation is focused on governance and transparency.

Currently, board members serve a one-year term and may serve an additional term if re-elected, up to a maximum of six terms. Elections are held in the month of July.  Meetings are generally 90 minutes, one-evening a month.  The board has evolved to a governing board with the enhanced operation of volunteers and advisory groups under the leadership of the Chief Executive Officer.  A large portion of our volunteers have been with the Foundation for several years which serves as a testament to the leadership and operational efficiencies of the organization.

The Board receives no direct or in-direct compensation and fully discharges their fiduciary duties in board governance, and additionally seeks the expertise of consultants, advisory associations and network organizations to ensure improved operations.  The Foundation is registered with GuideStar and Charity Check, a non-profit validation clearinghouse,  and is an active member of the Long Beach Non-Profit Partnership.

All Board members are enrolled in Board Development classes such as The Board Chair Academy, by Third Sector Learning and other additional development seminars held by the Long Beach Nonprofit Partnership and other consulting firms.  Board Development is an on-going process and every opportunity to improve governance, accountability, transparency and public service to the community is explored.  Every Board meeting also consists of a Board Development Training Session in addition to the normal business of the Board.

Interested parties wishing to join our board should request a Board Member Prospectus from the Foundation by calling (562) 987-5200.  While the current trend in the third sector is smaller, more efficient boards, the Foundation maintains a board size of six to twelve members on average.  The current board is in the process of installing new additional board members from a cross-section of our Long Beach community.  New Board member pictures will be posted here shortly.
